SER delivers crucial advice for air quality in Curaçao

Willemstad, December 12, 2023 – In a crucial step towards improving Curaçao’s air quality, the Social and Economic Council (SER) of Curaçao has delivered an in-depth opinion on the new air quality draft legislation. This advisory, presented last Monday, December 11, comes in response to a request from Acting Minister of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) Mr. Gilmar Pisas, and addresses pressing environmental and health concerns, particularly around the Schottegat industrial area.
The SER opinion addresses proposed changes to existing environmental legislation, including the Curaçao Nuisance Ordinance. The need for this opinion was reinforced by recent court rulings, which highlight the need for robust air quality standards and effective environmental legislation.
This development highlights a growing awareness within Curaçao society and the international community about the harmful impact of air pollution on public health. The Ministry of GMN, in close cooperation with the Directorate of Legislation and Legal Affairs (WJZ), has undertaken an ambitious legislative initiative to update and strengthen air quality standards.
The draft national ordinance sets limit values for a range of pollutants, demonstrating Curaçao’s commitment to meeting international environmental standards and ensuring the health of its citizens. The SER opinion emphasizes the urgency of more transparent and stringent regulations that not only protect public health but also consider economic and social considerations.
This move by the SER marks an important moment in Curaçao’s efforts to balance economic development with environmental responsibility. The report includes recommendations for future policies and actions, meeting both local needs and international standards.
