SOAW Minister Curaçao briefs SER on proposed changes to social assistance

Willemstad, August 10, 2026 – On Friday, August 7, 2026, Minister of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW) Charetti America-Francisca provided the Social and Economic Council (SER) of Curaçao with an oral briefing during an extraordinary meeting on two interrelated draft regulations concerning general social assistance. The proposals comprise a draft National Ordinance amending the Ordinance on the Provision of Social Assistance Curaçao 2008 and a draft National Decree containing general measures implementing article 14, paragraph 3, of that ordinance. Among other matters, the proposed regulations concern adjustments to social assistance benefit standards and the statutory maximum amount of general social assistance. During the meeting, the Minister, accompanied by her advisers, provided the Council with further information on the background and objectives of the proposals, the chosen legal framework, their financial implications, and aspects relating to implementation. The members of the SER subsequently asked clarifying questions and exchanged views with the Minister. The oral briefing was provided solely for informational purposes. The SER will take the information provided into account in its further deliberations and will subsequently, in accordance with its legal mandate, issue its advice to the Government independently and autonomously.
